Trailer and Towing Stuff

I posted on here a few weeks ago about really liking the usefulness of the rear cameras on my truck and trailer. They serve different purposes; the truck camera is for hitching my trailer, and has made seeing what’s behind me while backing up a whole lot easier. The trailer camera I use while towing and backing so I can see what’s behind the trailer. Both are so handy but it does take some getting used to. This is all new to me and I never knew what I was missing.

I had the monitor simply lying on the floor on the transmission tunnel but it was not easy to see details while backing so I finally started working on a wood panel to mount the monitor on. I wanted to make something removable to deter thievery & save space and that means it can be simply-made. Right now it’s basically just a rectangle made of particle board. The bottom of it is against the still-usable cup holder and the top leans back at an angle against the bottom of the dash. The monitor is mounted on the upper part and there’s room at the bottom for my tire pressure monitor. Both monitors have a 12v plug for power.

I am not planning on making anything real fancy but I will make it look nice since I gotta look at the thing on trips. For now it’s not painted but I will at least be putting something on the top edge to keep it from scratching the dash. This a pre-production model for testing purposes but I don’t want to test scratching; I’m going to drive around with it for a little to see what else it needs, like some added bracing and some way of attaching it. Once I get it useful then I’ll make it pretty. I think this will be a very helpful addition to my trailering safety.

I had to wait for a nice day to finish cleaning inside the trailer and today was that day. I blew off doing some household things to finish the cleaning. I swept it out again after getting the remaining things out from the last trip, then I washed the bathroom rug, swept the mat, and after that I mopped the floor. Done and dusted.

Then I got the second battery box mounted on the trailer. I plan to get a second battery at some point and this needed to be done before I get a battery. Right now it’s low on the priority list, but it is still on my list.

After that I took some stuff out of the trailer’s bunkhouse storage area. A few things I left out for now as I figure out what I really need to take with but still lighten the load. I decided to go back to putting some things in the truck that are in a rolling bin. The griddle and utensils, hatchet, hammock and some various other things for mainly longer trips are in there but it could be loaded up in the truck any time for a weekend trip. If I don’t need these things I can leave the whole bin since I put the essentials for camping with the trailer; hoses, power cord, propane are all still on-board.

I have enough room in the bunkhouse for my e-bike now, but a few weeks back a bolt came loose on the shifter gear at the rear and got bent & twisted in an unnatural fashion and the chain sticks out sideways now – it’s brokeded so bad I can’t ride it. I am not any good with that kind of stuff but I need to get it fixed so I will do some research. Dave probably knows about those things but first I’ll have a look to see if I can figure something out.

I found a boot tray in the basement so I am going to try that out in the trailer to keep the dirt and grit down and keep the floor from getting damaged. That means shoes off inside.

I have been trying to use the bins I already have in different configurations for the trailer cabinets but it’s just not working out. I am going to have to get some new bins that are more uniform in size and shape. I already started looking at some since I took measurements.

It was a productive day. I have one more task in the trailer and it’ll be done. It’s clean, I removed a few things, and it’s ready to go with little effort to load food.

That’s it for this post. See you next time.
