March 23rd, 2026 – My Final Night Here

Gonna miss hanging out in Lawrence, KS

Today I received the last of the closing documents to sign; it finally looks like it is really gonna happen. I signed & returned the two pages before they even got their finger off the “send” button. Get me outta here.

I have been staying in the driveway until tomorrow morning so I will be awake early & have everything ready to go first thing, with minimal packing to do before I hitch up the wagon and head out. I wish I could hitch it up and be ready tonight but the slope of the driveway means sleeping on a hill and that ain’t happening. I have the space all set for the dog crates and food container so those will load up in minutes.

Checking my route, starting out it looks like I just might catch a break & have a tailwind for several hours. That will be a welcomed change. Another thing about going Tuesday morning is I can avoid a lot of traffic and get to a good stopping point for the night earlier in the day to avoid the afternoon/evening rush. Next morning, up early for coffee or a double espresso and breakfast, then be ready to get gone as the morning rush hour winds down. Sometimes the mornings can be calmer than afternoons for towing because the air heats up later in the day and it helps stir up the winds.

That makes for a nice pace and there is always plenty of time to stop and sightsee if you come across something interesting to look at. You can drive 4-6 hours max and not feel too rushed but still see plenty. This time of year many places do not take off-season reservations so I think there won’t be many problems finding a place to camp.

I recently saw one of the new campsites at Love’s truck plazas, but they are right by the entry & exit so it would be noisy and it is so bright I don’t know if I could sleep there. They have around five spots at each one and they do seem to have a pretty decent setup. It would definitely do in an emergency – it is a safe, well-lit location with some utilities, food & showers…a very convenient place to camp.

That is all for this post. I am calling it a night. Next time you hear from me, I will be on the road again!

See you then!

Shawn
