February 26th, 2026 – Today’s Adventure in KC

The old Downtown Airport, which was the main one until the first Kansas City International was built. This one is now called Charles B. Wheeler Airport

One of the things left on my to-do list was a personal thing and I took care of that today.

My dad worked as an aircraft mechanic for TWA many years, and during those years TWA called Kansas City their home base and headquarters. He started there when the Kansas City airport was the old Downtown airport, years before Kansas City International was built up north in the middle of nowhere in Iowa.

There were countless TWA items my dad had accumulated through the years. As I went through stuff I collected it all in one spot trying to find something to do with it all.

I recently learned about The TWA Museum at 10 Richards Rd. in Kansas City, MO, which is at the old airport in a building off to the south side of the complex. I decided to donate all my dad’s stuff to the museum in his name and I made that trip this morning.

They take all the TWA memorabilia they get and catalog it for the collection, or in the case of duplicates, they sell the extras in the gift shop for people to purchase for their own collections and the proceeds help to keep the doors open. I am sure my dad would have been supportive of his donations helping since he had donated some things previously.

They were excited to get all of this stuff. The people were mostly – if not all – former employees and they were all so nice. My dad had earned some award from the corporate office and they had a company-wide banquet dinner in London, UK. The handful of recipients flew 1st Class on TWA (which was considered a more luxury-oriented airline at the time) and given five-star hotels to stay in. I talked with one lady there about that and she happened to be on the same flight as my parents getting eh same award!

They gave me a tour that lasted well over an hour and it was very interesting. I learned quite a bit about the airline history and saw some well-done exhibits. The docents are all very knowledgeable about most everything in the museum.

This was the best of the best in First Class service on any airline – TWA’s Ambassador Service, with nice utensils, real China dinnerware, probably crystal for the beverages. As you can see that was a serious spread, where a chef in a tall white hat carved roast beast in the aisle on a cart.

I am so glad I finally took the time to get the donations to them and taking a tour through it before leaving. Growing up in the TWA “family” it was certainly interesting to me.

If you are into aviation history at all you will see some interesting exhibits, and while you tour through the museum it is explained by people close to that history. I really cannot recommend this museum enough.

After I wound up my visit it was well after lunch so I was hungry. I declared today a Splurge Day and went for some Rosedale’s BBQ for my last time for a while. A classic never changes, and they are an example why.

A ham & beef combo on a roll with a side of THE best crinkle fries that I have ever eaten anywhere. Wash that down with a water…I am trying to be healthy here!!!

Oh.

Yeah.

I ate what I could and still stay comfortable. I don’t power eat like I used to but this was not a huge sandwich to start with. It was plenty though and I savored every tasty bite.

Until we meet again, Rosedale’s! You will always be the best barbecue ANYWHERE, and most certainly in Kansas City.

So it was a good day and I needed a day like this one. It was a welcomed break. Here’s a couple of good stops for you if you are in the Kansas City metro area.

I’ll see ya next time.
