Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?
A grilled cheese, made with ONLY Kraft Deluxe American cheese and real butter.
Of course, back in the day, my mom used Wonder Bread – then the diet equivalent of a giant sliced glue stick – and made on the vintage General Electric griddle/waffle maker we had for many years. Then it was wrapped up in the classic waxed paper for freshness, the veggie was Guy’s potato chips, and they were packed with love in my Beatles “Yellow Submarine” lunchbox. Grab me a couple of chocolate or strawberry milks from the cafeteria to complete the order and that was school lunch for this kid!
You may poo-poo the thought of a cold grilled cheese, and they ARE different, but they are still really good…just not crispy.
Of course, I don’t eat white bread – it’s Dave’s Killer Bread 21-Grain & Seeds because, well…with all that whole grain goodness it’s NOT glue. And, of course, it’s only Kerrygold butter because it’s the best. And STILL none of that nasty-ass stuff called mayo on it.
I still eat them – even cold on a road trip – and they still take me back.
